Police are very good!
There is a presumption of innocence: Fact: There is enough evidence to bring you to trial or you wouldn't have been charged. The system has already tried you.
The legal system (police-prosecution-courts) will present fair and unbiased evidence including exculpatory information: Fact: "You" have been charged with the crime. There is no need to look elsewhere.
Your attorney, or public defender, has unlimited means with which to defend you. Fact: The state or federal government has "all" the money and manpower it requires to investigate and bring you to trial. Your attorney is usually limited by time, money and assistance.
The truth will come out at the trial: Fact: Unless you and your attorney investigate, and prove "Beyond A Reasonable Doubt" that you are innocent, you will be convicted and sentenced.
Private Investigators are expensive and probably won't help: Fact: Private investigators charge less than the mechanic at your local garage, where you could probably work if you wern't going to jail.
